For our late summer holiday last year we enjoyed a drive down to Portugal through France and Spain stopping at various places to cycle the local countryside. Accommodation was sourced through Bookings.com using the i-phone usually a couple of days in advance but it soon became aparent we were missing some spectacular countryside so a bit more flexibility was required, and the motorhome idea was born.
We started looking around at pre-owned vans in January with a wish list of requirements that had been fashioned from our sailing experiences of surviving in small spaces, the top priority was a comfortable bed, shower and heating but it soon became clear that the only van that ticked the most boxes was a new Burstner T690G, a German manufactured 2/3 berth motorhome on a Fiat Ducato chassis.
The order was placed with Southdowns Motorhomes for a March delivery on a 15 plate and we duly collected the van on 2nd March. The handover was preceded by a four-hour explanation and demonstration of all the vans systems which included a heated garage ( well you can’t have the bikes getting cold ) and then a tentative drive home in the new team car.
The following few days saw us fitting out the van with bike stands, generator and all manner of small improvements to make life aboard a little more comfortable.
